Kana Challenge (KANA) Marshall, Shelly $0 helps you learn the Japanese syllabaries of hiragana and katakana. Latin I Review 1.21 (LATIN) Meltzer, David $10 is a Latin vocabulary and culture review program. Over 400 questions are included and more can be easily added. It reviews 1st, 2nd, and 3rd declension; 1st and 2nd conjugation; 1st, 2nd, and 3rd declension adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, and numerals. Learn to Sign 2.5 (LSIGN) HCB Computing $15 teaches the American Sign Language, finger spelling only. It will show a letter at a time, spell words, or read and display a text file in sign language. It displays actual signs such as mother, hello, colors, and other common words. It has support for left-handed people. Normally, we would not add a program like this to the library because it is in uncompiled BASIC, requiring the user to have IBM BASIC or GWBASIC, and the "shareware version" only includes two of the five sets of drills. However, after comparing it to other Spanish tutors, we found it to contain more words and have a more logical approach, in our opinion. Mexican Slang (MEXSLNG) In One EAR Publications $10 is a guide to the hip talk and lewd eloquence of the Spanish used commonly by modern Mexicans. This is the way the teens, yuppies, cholos, outlaws and in-laws talk. If you have learned Spanish in school, you'll will welcome the wealth of "real world" talk presented here. (Do you know why a nice girl might not want to order "huevos for breakfast?) The words and expressions in this program are not in a standard dictionary. WARNING: Contains adult language. Span-Eng is a Spanish to English vocabulary drill. Requires Basic. Spanish Campbell, George $0 is a Spanish phrasebook that talks. Thirty-six useful phrases for travellers can be selected from a one-screen menu. The digitized voice is excellent for the little speaker in the PC. It does not work on Compaq and Sharp portables. Spanish Language Acquisition Software (SLAS) Erickson, Timothy R. $0 are designed to aid you in the study of Spanish, as opposed to being complete Spanish tutorials themselves. Lessons cover the conjugation of verbs, the use of the definite article, the spelling of numbers and the differences between the use of "ser and "estar. Spanish Quizzler (SPANVOC) John Huley Assoc. $20 quizzes you on 186 Spanish words in 6 categories. SpanMath 1.0 (SPANMAT) Thorson, Chris $10 is a Spanish math tutor that will teach the names of Spanish numbers. -------------------------------- END OF SMALL PROGRAMS DISK #3060 -------------------------------- Cantonese Crew, Louie $? #20009/811 stores data regarding Cantonese vocabulary and English meanings. It flashes lessons to you, and branches in the next round to those that you missed in the last. It keeps score on what parts you miss, (meaning, tone, measure...) It uses a romanized form for Cantonese, but adapts to several commercial programs to allow you to enter characters (even for Mandarin.) Gakusei 1.0 Barham Software $44 #20009/4663 is a tutorial on the Japanese language. You can view the Hiragana and Katakana character sets and answers can be typed with Japanese characters. Japanese character keyboards resemble the keyboards of Japanese word-processing equipment. Japanese characters may be printed with a dot-matrix or laser printer. An extensive lesson glossary and a dictionary with conjugated verbs and true adjectives are provided. Grammar is covered extensively in this program. Requires 640K memory, 1meg of hard disk space, EGA/VGA, and DOS 3.3+. Japanese For Business & Travel Bernstein, Richard #20009/712 is a tutorial composed of questions about vocabulary, grammar, and culture. The course assumes no prior knowledge of Japanese. It even starts with a little Japanese music to put you in the right frame of mind. Included as part of the program is a sample of a program for learning the Katakana (Japanese characters). However, when we tried to run that part of the program , it locked up our machines, so don't try menu item 7. The rest of the program seems to run all right. Kapian Mosier, Phil $35 #20009/3364 helps you learn the Chinese language using a flash card approach. You can select either Long or Short Form characters and romanization, with ten different testing displays provided. The program also draws all the characters on the screen one stroke at a time, in correct stroke order and at user-adjustable speeds. Early Spanish DareWare, Inc. ASP $33 #20192 [2 disks] is a bilingual (Eng./Span.) program which teaches numbers and simple math. With a sound card, the questions are heard in both languages. You can turn off one language to teach kids the other language. French Word Power BC Enterprises Software $19 #4816 will help French students build their vocabulary. It includes a total of 1200 words with sentences, and 400 sentences for translation. Words are broken down into Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives/Misc. Adverbs, prepositions, and pronouns are included. Up to 400 hundred new words can be added. The current words can be replaced or modified. Each category is broken up into 20 tests of 20 words each. Testing formats include multiple choice and matching. German Tyler, Thomas E. $10 #3514 is an English to German and German to English dictionary and translator program. It can translate words and phrases as well as "sounds like". You can add, change, delete and search for words. There is an English to German or German to English quiz. You may print a complete dictionary of all the words in the data file, sorted in any order you like. There are only 68 words in the provided dictionary, but you can add as many words as you like to the data file. German Word Ladder 2.12 Widergren, Paul R. $12-$22 #4134 is a series of programs for studying German vocabulary and grammar. The program comes with 20 data files, including 12 noun files grouped according to subject and four verb files. Additional files can be created using any word-processor which can save files in ASCII-format. The program was written by a high school German teacher. Hebrew Tutorial Program Rapier, David $20 #1243 is a vocabulary program designed to guide a student through an entire first year in biblical Hebrew. It is based on the book, Introduction to Biblical Hebrew, by Thomas O. Lambdin. The program has Hebrew-English, English-Hebrew quizzes for every Hebrew word appearing 10 or more times in the Old Testament plus some that appear fewer times. It has thousands of verb forms with an option to be quizzed on meaning or parsing. Richard Gordon, Seattle, WA, reports that this will not work on his fully-expanded PCjr. He says "The problem appears to be that the program was compiled using Borland's Turbo BASIC. Unless a patch is used, none of Turbo BASIC's output will run on any PCjr, cutting programmers off from 500,000 potential users." The patch is available on the IBM forum on CompuServe. Italian Tyler, T. $10 #3483 is an English to Italian and Italian to English dictionary and translator program. It can translate words and phrases as well as "sounds like". You can add, change, delete and search for words. You may print a complete dictionary of all the words in the data file, sorted in any order you like. Japanese I 08-93 CD Haller, Conrad $25 #20223 [4 MegaDisks] is a self study course for the Japanese language. It teaches you to speak, read and understand the basics of Japanese. It features over 3MB of digitized speech. Being able to hear a voice speak the language makes all the difference in the world in learning a language. You also see phrases spelled in English, in Japanese and phonetically. Requires 640K RAM and a hard disk or high density floppy and CGA or VGA. Available only on four 3.5" 1.44MB disks at a special price of $9.99 or on the August CD. Because the program takes over 4MB of hard disk space, we have preinstalled it on the August PsL Monthly CD, as well as putting it on the CD in ZIP format. Language Teacher Micro Tutor Products $15 each or $65 for series #0611 teaches French and Spanish 1 & 2, and German and Italian 1. You are allowed to edit any of the vocabulary or phrase files. With this feature, you can create your own word lists. You can also use these programs as an English/Other- Language dictionary. (At one time these programs were in uncompiled Basic and difficult to use. They have been completely overhauled and are in EXE format.) LinguaPro/Spanish 2.11a [LINGUA] 08-93 CD Schulenberg and Associates, Inc. ASP $45 #12391 is multi-faceted program for serious Spanish students. It offers an 18,000 word user-modifiable on-line dictionary, vocabulary flashcard system, and verb flashcard system that teaches verbs in all tenses and persons using complete sentences. LinguaPro can also be used for the construction of English vocabulary sets, or data files containing general question/answer information. Requires 460K RAM and 700K of disk space. Rexl 1.1 Aurand, Henry S. ASP $24 #27605/3632 [2 disks] is a tutorial for intermediate Spanish students. You page through 76 screens of material from Spanish literature. If a word or phrase is unknown to you, you can move the cursor to it and see the translation. Or you can move the cursor along as you read and see the meaning of each word. An automatic scan mode can be set to a specified number of words per minute. Ole! Rewarding Spanish Walker, Robert $10-$20 #27605/4628 is a well rounded Spanish tutorial offering verb conjugation, travelling Spanish as well as conversational phrases. The program is menu driven and you can easily pick and choose what you want to learn. Spanish for Travellers Bernstein, Richard N. $0 #7823/1241 teaches Spanish with an emphasis on how to pronounce the words, not just on memorizing them. It also has a separate menu called the Phrase/Verb menu which teaches standard phrases, about verbs, and also has extra vocabulary words for the serious student. Spanish WordMaster Language Master International $20 #7823/2800 is a Spanish language vocabulary tutor with 2000 words. Spell and Pronounce Spanish Words Computer Specialties $25 #7823/4416 is an easy way to learn how to spell and pronounce Spanish words. You are given a wide selection on words from animals to things around the house. Since the program does not drill you on using the words in sentences, this program cannot be used by itself to learn Spanish, but it looks like a good supplement and an excellent way for people studying Spanish to drill on vocabulary. Translator Tyler, T. $10 #7823/3436 is an English/Spanish translator and dictionary program. It translates single words and phrases and shows a phonetic spelling of what the word or phrase should sound like. There is an English to Spanish or Spanish to English quiz. It can also print a sorted dictionary. Tour de Vocabulaire 1.0 Dowd, Jim $10 #4879 is an educational game designed to help build your French vocabulary and knowledge of French history. The object of the game is to move the French flag along a pre-defined route across France while using the least amount of gasoline as possible. The flag is moved by correctly answering French vocabulary questions which are drawn from a list of over 5,000 words. Ultimate Spanish and Ultimate French Ultimate Software $20 each #3999 quizzes you from a comprehensive library of vocabulary words, verb conjugation and phrases. Words are grouped into nouns, verbs and miscellaneous for easier learning. You can elect multiple-choice or fill-in-the-blank drills. Mouse support makes multiple choice easy, but click detection was not accurate. This is an excellent set of language drills. Vocabulator 3.1 Blue Bull Software ASP $25 #4479 drills you in vocabulary in any of ten different languages, including English, Afrikans, French, German, Italian, Portuges, Slovak, Spanish, Tswana and Zulu. You can select prompting in your language or the other language. More words and phrases can easily be added to the database. Displayed on the screen are special non-English characters which can be inserted into words via the function keys. A list of words can also be printed. Requires 400K memory, hard disk with at least 1 meg free and DOS 3.0+. ZET Hoffman, Robert $30 #4244 is an efficient way to memorize anything. An extensive set of files for learning Spanish is included, but you can create your own files for any subject. The innovative approach used by this program is to rearrange questions or language phrases based on whether or not you got them right. The result is that the more often you answer a particular prompt correctly, the less often you will be drilled on it, and conversely, the more you will be drilled on incorrect responses. The program is well designed and easy to use. Another nice feature is the ability to search all of your files for a particular word or phrase. ]]]]]
